As young people and school staff return for a new academic year I hope to see the following approaches: 😊 A lovely warm welcome to all those students starting a new school or returning to a brand new year group. . 😊 Staff checking in with students … how was your holiday ? Doing that covert investigation to really understand their worlds and what they may have heard, seen or been on the receiving end of… appearances can be deceiving… . 😊 For all students to be told they have potential, are cared for by the staff and they all know where to go if they need to talk to someone or just have a space to relax if they feel overwhelmed - do all your students know their support network in school? . 😊For all students to be told about all the after school clubs and activities they can get involved in so they feel a deeper sense of belonging to the school and staff. Lets encourage more having a go and enjoying things like sports. . 😊All students to be reminded that whatever happened last term is now in the past. We learn from it and grow . Labels can stick and every child should feel they have a new chance to show themselves and everyone else who they really are without being judged on past behavior. . 😊Laughter in schools…. Let’s promote fun whilst learning. It doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom,happy students are more likely to want to learn . . 😊Staff showing vulnerability. At the right times this is powerful… reminding students that even adults make mistakes, even adults are on that journey of life where we are evolving to reach our potential. Let’s remind them we are not corporate robots and that behind the professional exterior there is a person … a human being you can hopefully relate to & connect to. . I am going into the new school year full of hope and optimism. Just because I didn’t scream and shout about the abuse going on in my foster home doesn’t mean I didn’t carry that internal pain to school everyday. . So next Monday we play our first @smashlifeuk football game - young people, ambassadors and staff all coming together to make memories and have fun that will last a lifetime! . Well done to my bro @smithyandy13 for bringing it altogether - check out Andy modelling our new kit designed in collaboration with Smash Life head of media @bartldrum - it promises to be a special day @wrekincollege with legend Ryan from the awesome @fishheads2021 feeding all the players! . My carers never once came to watch me play football as a child, a sport as a child I loved. Seeing all the other parents cheering their kids on and seeing nobody on the touch line giving me that positive reinforcement or even taking me to and from games is just one of the reasons why we want to do this for young people now we support. Sport is to be enjoyed & an ideal place to have fun, offer encouragement,learn and grow. . Trauma is not what just happened it’s the grief you go through asking yourself; ‘Why didn’t I have that growing up?’ when you see for alot of other children it was their norm. . We can’t change the past but we can all create a better future for those children now ! . Thanks @dele ❤️ . For those working within tra Thanks @dele ❤️ . For those working within trauma related professions this interview by @gneville2 made sense. It was shocking to hear but Dele’s heartbreaking journey as a child is also one many could relate to in their own unique way or have walked alongside people who have gone through similar experiences. It resonated with me massively. . For such a high profile sports professional to bare his soul to the world for everyone to see was so brave. Especially as a man. Kudos . Vulnerability at its most powerful. It connects. It’s real. It’s authentic. . So what have we learned here? . Don’t fucking judge. Don’t be quick to discount people based on their surface level behavior or performances. Be curious… check in…what’s really going on for them or what’s happened to them that has made them who they are? They may not be ready to heal but they won’t forget the kindness you showed them. I haven’t forgotten those people who were trying for years to connect and reach out to me. Be the difference. . Reflecting on other sports stars I’ve looked upto as a child they all suffered childhood trauma, maybe I saw something in their outwardly behavior in my own unconsciously… usually masked by banter, people pleasing behaviors and moments of flash points fueled by anger. “Why the hell has he reacted like that?” a common question in games with players like @paul_gascoigne8 @dennisrodman @wrightyofficial … survival mode we take on as children coming through into adulthood. . They all made a success of themselves despite their trauma. We all can, humans are amazing resilient sentient beings. Dele is one amazing example of this. . A Trauma informed society requires ALL OF US to enhance our empathic skills. . Are you part of the solution or part of the problem ? . From running around playing football together, causing trouble, being naughty at home/school, fighting and arguing (like most siblings do) to living with two bullies and enduring an 8.5 years (3102 days) with them whilst they abused us whilst being paid for the privilege… To then not talking in our late teens and twenties due to the abuse to RECONNECTING in our thirties to start something very close to our hearts Smash Life.
